| Toong doong doong chang! Toong doong doong chang! The sound of drums, gongs and cymbals, the loud crack, crack, cracking of fire crackers, bright and colourful costumes. All this makes up the spectacle of the Lion Dance - which the Chinese believe brings good fortune and prosperity. There are many stories as to how the Lion Dance evolved. One legend is that an emperor dreamt about being saved from bandits by a Lion. The next day, he ordered his guards to follow the steps of the lion that he dreamt of. From that day forward, it is believed that a Lion Dance can chase away bad energy and bring in good fortune to any festive occasion. But, it's true origins may never be known, but what is certain is that the Lion Dance has been a part of Chinese performing arts for more than 1,000 years - yes, over a millennium - and no one can doubt the prominent role it plays in Chinese culture. | |
